OK, first up is my new workbench. For scale, the legs are 3×3’s and the top is (sacrificial) 18mm MDF rebated into the frame and resting on multiple 3″ wide cross-braces. Still to be done is flush-mounting the woodworking vice into the left-hand face, mounting the metal vice on the right and cutting & fitting the lower shelves for tool and parts storage 
OK, enough of that – back to the car. The throttle cable was a bugger to get off – it’s a square plastic mounting where you have to push a leg in on each side all at once – took me ages being careful, as I’ve not got a spare. Not wanting to fall foul (again) of ending up with “spare” bolts when I reassemble the engine, I’ve taken to using some nice dummy cards as I take bits off.
The head bolts are the earlier M12 star-bit ones, for anyone wondering, which I understand are re-usable unlike the later Torx ones.
I’ve been following the procedure in the Autodata manual and have got to the part that says “now you’ve removed all the bolts, in the correct order, gently remove the head” … but it’s stuck solid 
What’s the best technique for getting it off? I’ve given it a few tentative knocks with a rubber mallet to no effect. There doesn’t seem to be anywhere to get purchase to try rocking it back and forth. What’s the secret trick?
